This math isn't mathing, as the kids say.
Over the past year, we've researched hundreds of the nation's top colleges and universities, and scored and ranked over 200 of them on overall AI readiness that goes well beyond a school offering its undergrads free ChatGPT (see sidebar for description).
The University of Utah scored a 9.5 - an exceptional result - tying it with Michigan for #3 nationally, ahead of every Ivy but Cornell.
And yet in 2026 national polls, Utah places a woeful #179 in one, and #112 in another. Bad math? Or lack of recognition?
We'll go with lack of recognition. After all, Utah is known nationally as a Big 12 athletics powerhouse and the flagship university in Utah, but it is not a name most people associate with AI leadership. They should.
Check out Utah's report card below - made by the same engine and scored with the same methodology as every other R1 school we researched (166 of them).

What is AI-readiness?
AIREDEX™ measures AI-readiness across the whole academic institution: institutional governance and leadership, curriculum and coursework available to undergraduates, industry and capital partnerships, and research depth and funding. The result is a score built from public, verifiable evidence that we believe presents the most realistic measure of how well a school will prepare its undergraduates for an AI-driven future.
What makes Utah special?
It's a good thing for Utah that AIREDEX™ does not score AI readiness on national polling - or snob appeal. Instead, we look at whether an institution actually built the infrastructure, governance, and curriculum that a university serious about preparing its students for an AI-driven future would have.
And Utah is serious about AI. While many schools in AIREDEX™'s database govern AI as a side-task or through an ad-hoc committee, Utah has leaned in hard to governance: the Utes have a Chief AI Officer with a $100 million initiative behind him, reporting directly to the Provost and chairing a nine-member cross-campus executive committee. More than a mission statement, this is a true institutional mandate with a budget.
We'd call that serious.
From the student's perspective
Utah undergrads can pursue an AI minor through two different colleges, the Kahlert School of Computing or the David Eccles School of Business, with the Eccles minor open to any major on campus. Offering an AI credential in a business school, open to every major, signals a campus-wide commitment to AI readiness; most universities keep their AI coursework walled-off from non computer science and engineering majors.
A standalone Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, the first of its kind in Utah, began accepting its first cohort this fall. Every student has free access to ChatGPT Edu, deployed campus-wide in late November 2025, alongside Google Gemini and NotebookLM.
For research access, the Redtail supercomputer and Utah's CHPC clusters put free GPU compute in reach of any student who wants it, not just those in funded labs or graduate research students.
Redtail ranks 159th among the fastest supercomputers on Earth, and any Utah undergrad can request time on it.
Money for AI research
The University of Utah has committed a combined $150 million to AI infrastructure, among the largest such commitments at any public university. That includes the $100 million One-U Responsible AI Initiative, launched in October 2023 with a nine-member cross-campus executive committee, and the $50 million Redtail AI Factory, a public-private supercomputer built with HPE and NVIDIA that ranked No. 159 on the Top500 list of the world's fastest systems. In July 2026, Utah was also selected to lead a $20 million NSF AURORA cloud laboratory grant, one of a small national network of AI-driven research facilities.

That B is the one blemish on Utah's report card. The $150 million above is Utah's own investment plus one federal grant -- the Industry & Capital section tracks outside capital and partnerships coming in from the private sector.
Industry partnerships are how a research university turns technical strength into visibility -- the kind that pulls in outside experts and sponsored research dollars, and help create recruiting pipelines that propel undergrads into AI-related jobs and companies.
True, Redtail is a real public-private partnership, but Utah's industry relationships beyond HPE and NVIDIA are still thin relative to its excellent research capabilities. We would expect to see three or four private sector partnerships, as we have at UT Austin.
With the addition of a dedicated corporate AI-recruiting pipeline, as we've seen at Cincinnati, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Oregon State, there is little doubt that Utah will likely move up the national AI readiness leaderboard.
Worth a second look
Utah didn't get to the top 3 in the country by accident, and it isn't waiting for U.S. News to catch up. While a ranking system built for a pre-AI era keeps it parked at 179, this university has already built the infrastructure, hired the leadership, and opened the coursework that most of the country's more "respected" schools still haven't touched.
