AIREDEX™ Score: 4.9 /10
Caltech is one of the strongest research institutions in the country, but with fewer than 1,000 undergraduates, it has not built the programmatic infrastructure of a 30,000-student national research university. Caltech appears to govern itself differently, with a flat, faculty-led hierarchy and no administrative layer for AI.
Caltech's $3 million Point72 gift funds an AI research program that puts undergraduates directly into faculty labs, work most universities reserve for graduate students. Undergraduates can also run experiments on TPUs and Axion processors added to the Resnick High Performance Computing Center through a July 2025 Google Public Sector partnership, and take a standalone Philosophy course covering algorithmic bias, explainable AI, and data ownership. What Caltech has not yet built, a standing AI governance body, a dedicated AI executive, or a standalone undergraduate AI major, reflects its scale and structure rather than its obvious commitment to research.
