Battle of Texas: 8 universities, ranked by AI-Readiness

Eight Texas rivals ... and very different AI strategies.

From Austin to Lubbock, Texas is home to some of the best-known universities in America. But which of them is best at preparing their students for the AI revolution?

Everything's bigger in Texas, including the gap between the top AI ready schools and the bottom.

We just wrapped the inaugural AIREDEX.ai Battle of Texas — AI Readiness challenge, where we ran eight of the top research universities in Texas through our AI readiness engine.

We measured AI readiness factors across multiple pillars, from each school's institutional commitment and curriculum development to AI-focused research output and investment.

Despite all 8 schools being elite, national research institutions, the scores still ranged from a high of 9.1 down to a 5.5.

At the top, The University of Texas at Austin scored a 9.1, one of the top scores in the country. And it's no surprise: undergrads at UT can now earn a specialized AI concentration, and have access to AI coursework spanning law, medicine, business, and information science. They also get a built-in AI tutor and hands-on access to Horizon, a $457 million NSF-funded supercomputer on track to be the nation's largest academic system.

The Rice University Owls aren't far behind, scoring an 8.8, in no small part because Rice offers one of the only standalone AI majors in the country.

The middle of the Texas pack still has real standouts: Texas A&M University built its own AI chat platform for students and backs it with TAMIDS, a data science institute connecting undergrads to internship pipelines at NVIDIA and Phillips 66. Baylor University named a Vice Provost for AI, one of the only schools in the group with that kind of dedicated leadership, and backs it with an NSF-funded responsible AI research center.

At the bottom of the Texas heap is Texas Tech University — though it may not be the cellar-dweller for long; Tech just launched its first B.S. in Human-Centered AI this past year, a potential signal of where things are headed, even as the school's overall infrastructure and governance are still catching up.

A theme across almost every school we looked at: the money and the classroom work often run ahead of governance. Several schools have real capital committed to AI, including multiple appearances from NVIDIA and Dell Technologies, but many are still building out their campus-wide governance and leadership.

With this level of commitment, and the competitive nature of Texas schools, we wouldn't be surprised to see these standings shift as a rising tide lifts all eight.
