Clemson University
SC · AI Readiness #86 of 227
AIREDEX™ Score: 7.6 /10
Clemson backs its AI push with a $3M ChatGPT Edu deployment, a $20M NSF flagship grant it leads, and two cross-disciplinary research hubs launched inside its new AI Initiative.
Clemson's Center for Human-AI Interaction, Collaboration, and Teaming (CU-CHAI) ranks #1 globally for human-AI teaming research, and AIRISE, its AI research institute, draws 90+ faculty across 30+ disciplines. Both run partly on the Palmetto 2 supercomputer, a Top500-ranked system. Undergraduates can pursue a 24-credit AI Minor open to all majors, and faculty across the university organize through the AI Initiative's TEACH-AI community. For all that infrastructure, Clemson still runs its AI ethics work through initiative-level guidance rather than a dedicated office, and its research centers haven't yet produced a fellowship or a role built specifically around AI. That gap between research muscle and formal structure separates Clemson from the flagships already a tier ahead.
