Duke University
NC · AI Readiness #21 of 227
AIREDEX™ Score: 9.0 /10
Duke undergraduates can pursue a formal AI and machine learning concentration in computer science, plus all students can participate in first-year AI seminars spanning neuroscience, law, and the humanities.
Duke undergraduates stand to gain a first-of-its-kind option: engineering faculty have proposed a dedicated AI Engineering major, targeting a fall 2027 launch, that would make Duke one of the first universities in the country to offer a standalone undergraduate AI degree. That expansion builds on serious institutional muscle already in place, including the NSF-funded Athena Institute, a $20 million Duke-led research effort on AI-driven edge computing, and a $30 million campus computing investment through the Elevating Duke Computing initiative. As the new major moves through approval, Duke's undergraduate AI options are positioned to grow substantially.
