Northwestern University
IL · AI Readiness #117 of 227
AIREDEX™ Score: 7.1 /10
Northwestern's undergraduate AI major launches Fall 2026 alongside an AI minor already open to all non-engineering students, but everyday AI tool access for undergrads remains limited while research infrastructure and federal funding are genuinely exceptional.
Northwestern's Provost-housed NNCI hub connects all twelve schools under named co-directors, giving undergrads a rare entry point into a genuinely interdisciplinary AI research environment. Two separate $20M NSF grants, the SkAI Institute and the DREAM Cloud Lab, place Northwestern among a small group of universities leading federally funded AI science. The AI minor is already open to any non-CS undergraduate; the full AI major follows Fall 2026. What undergrads won't find yet: a qualifying campus-wide AI tool beyond Microsoft Copilot, or a dedicated AI capital endowment to fund the next phase.
