United States Naval Academy
MD · AI Readiness #216 of 227
AIREDEX™ Score: 4.2 /10
The Naval Academy made history in summer 2026 when midshipmen became the first to deploy robotics and autonomous systems directly from Yard Patrol craft, integrating air, surface, and undersea drones into a structured training block called YP NEXT.
The Naval Academy's YP NEXT program brought industry partners Havoc AI, BlackSea Technologies, Jaia Robotics, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory onto the water alongside midshipmen, turning autonomous systems employment into a core summer seamanship requirement. On campus, the Data Science major, whose inaugural class graduated in 2025, gives undergrads a curriculum grounded in machine learning and cloud computing, while Computer Science electives extend AI and ML coursework across the technical curriculum. The Department of the Navy's GenAI.mil platform, mandated Navy-wide in January 2026, is rolling out toward reaching the USNA community as adoption continues.
