University of Chicago
IL · AI Readiness #56 of 227
AIREDEX™ Score: 8.2 /10
UChicago undergraduates get full Claude Enterprise access campus-wide, can join Google's Student Researcher Program, and can tap a 10,000-core research computing cluster available to any enrolled student.
UChicago built its own AI platform, PhoenixAI, well before rolling out campus-wide Claude Enterprise access in 2026, giving students hands-on exposure to multiple AI systems rather than just one. That access sits inside a roughly $200 million fundraising push, anchored by a $50 million faculty and machine-learning research challenge, that is expanding AI work across the university. Two new faculty committees are now shaping how AI fits into coursework and campus life going forward. As those governance structures mature, UChicago's undergraduate AI access is positioned to become even more structured and expansive in the years ahead.

Selected Highlights
- Two new faculty governance committees announced June 2026 — Faculty Committee for AI and Academic Life chaired by William Hubbard, and AI and Education committee chaired by Emily Lynn Osborn — plus prior AI and Education Working Group that delivered formal report to president and provost July 2025.
- $50M Mansueto gift anchoring ~$200M Faculty of Mind and Machine Challenge (April 2026) plus $20M Bike Shop @UChicago gift (February 2026) and $21M anonymous CAAI gift — total named AI philanthropic capital exceeds $90M.
- Data Science Institute (Faculty Director of AI: Rebecca Willett) draws from CS, Statistics, Geophysical Sciences, and multiple other departments; CAAI at Booth (Director: Sanjog Misra) spans business, healthcare, and policy — both meet multi-school cross-disciplinary threshold.
- XLab (Existential Risk Laboratory, Director: Daniel Holz) has explicit AI safety mandate, active AI Security Guide curriculum, and Summer Research Fellowship; Harris PPHA 38850 and UChicago Professional AI Governance course provide additional ethics programming.
- UChicago built PhoenixAI in-house (launched September 2024, upgraded to GPT-5.4/Claude Opus 4.7 as of July 2026) AND separately licensed Claude Enterprise campus-wide for fall 2026 — one of very few universities with both a proprietary platform and a full enterprise LLM license.
