AIREDEX™ Score: 7.4 /10
AICORE, a cross-college AI research center, launched at UMass Lowell in April 2026, and a standalone B.S. in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Science now pipelines students directly to MITRE, Microsoft, and Lincoln Labs.
UMass Lowell undergrads in the AIDA program also have a standalone AI Ethics course (PHIL 3109) in the Philosophy department, ChatGPT Enterprise deployed campus-wide since 2024, and a Faculty Senate AI Task Force co-chaired by Kevin Petersen and Karoline Evans that has produced a formal Academic Integrity policy amendment. Anna Rumshisky directs that center, which draws faculty from four colleges and focuses on AI safety, interpretability, and human-AI interaction, part of a federal research portfolio spanning NSF, Army Research Office, NIH, DARPA, and DOE.
