University of Virginia
VA · AI Readiness #89 of 227
AIREDEX™ Score: 7.5 /10
UVA's ethics institute for AI ($62M-backed, based at Darden) and its 31,000-sq-ft Capital One AI research space anchor the university's AI investment, alongside enterprise tools including a locally-hosted large language model.
AI Research@UVA, co-directed by Ryan Wright and Henry Kautz, coordinates work across all 12 schools, while the Faculty AI Guides network reaches 53 instructors in 10 schools. UVA's new AI Literacy and Action Lab is piloting credit-bearing courses in the sciences, humanities, and arts. Curriculum integration extends into law, medicine, and business, and researchers can tap the Afton high-performance computing cluster's NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. UVA still has no standalone undergraduate AI major, minor, or certificate, no verified undergraduate-facing AI career pipeline, and no flagship federal AI grant where it leads rather than participates. That first gap already puts it behind in-state peer Virginia Tech, which opened an AI minor to all majors this fall.
